Qatar- Workshop for clinical clerkship directors

Doha: Qatar University College of Medicine (QU-CMED) recently held a workshop to orient clinical clerkship directors on academic essentials and equip them with the necessary knowledge skills and capacities for teaching education assessment and evaluation.

Themed “Workshop for Clinical Clerkship Directors” the forum was organized in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). Over 13 participants from the College HMC and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) were given valuable insight into clinical teaching and information on successful teaching/learning approaches and the conditions or external influences that enhance it the role of teachers and learners and the types of teacher/learner interactions.

Attendees included QU VP for Medical Education and CMED dean Dr Egon Toft and CMED associate dean for Clinical Affairs and HMC Medical Education director Dr Abdullatif Al Khal as well as college faculty. The program agenda included presentations by CMED associate dean for academic affairs and professor of surgery and medical education and adviser to QU president Prof Hossam Hamdy professor of psychiatry Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) co-secretary and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Accreditation Services senior director Dr Dan Hunt University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine Office of International Education associate dean Dr Ara Tekian and HMC executive director of research Pulmonology Division chief and senior consultant and Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar professor of clinical paediatrics Prof Ibrahim Janahi. They addressed topics on “Building a New Medical School: The Role of Accreditation Standards” “Workshop-Review and Application of WFME Standards: Standards that deal with teaching assessment and quality assurance” “Curriculum Development for Clinical Clerkships” “Identification of Overall Goals and Objectives” and more.

Dr Toft said: “Through this workshop the College of Medicine is highlighting its ongoing commitment to education excellence and collaborative health education training.

“The College continues to deliver on its mission and vision to promote clinical teaching engage healthcare practitioners on lifelong learning and orient them on efficient teaching techniques that lead to productive learning and successful outcomes.

This will contribute to advancing the healthcare sector in line with the goals and values of the National Health Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.” HMC senior consultant in emergency medicine Dr Khalid Bashir who attended the workshop expressed his gratitude to the College for organizing the workshop and inviting many internationally-renowned speakers. “It helped me to get a deeper understanding of my future role” he said adding “medical education is changing and the presentations covered the future of innovative emergency medicine.”
