Qatar- Al Kawari to speak on vision for Unesco today

Doha: Qatar’s candidate for the post of Unesco director-general and Cultural Adviser to the Emiri Diwan H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari met South African Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga in Pretoria.

Al Kawari presented his strategy and vision as Qatar’s nominee to the post stressing that enhancing the role of education will be a big part of his tenure. Motshekga expressed her admiration of Qatar and its role in improving education services worldwide. She highlighted the role of Education Above All initiative and its Educate a Child program as something South Africa benefited from. She then wished Qatar’s nominee success in his bid.

The meeting was on Al Kuwari’s schedule for the visit to South Africa. Al Kawari also visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation which aims to combat racism and promote peace. He also met researchers at the foundation to discuss his vision for Unesco. The foundation endorsed him for the role and wished him well.

Today Al Kawari will attend a ceremony along with diplomats and South African officials and will speak about his vision for Unesco focusing on its role in Africa. He is held in high regard in Africa particularly due to his work as Deputy Chairman of the Anti-Racism Committee in his capacity as a UN delegate.QNA
