GCC Oceans Experts Workshop kicks off


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Sara Al-Mezeal KUWAIT April 11 (KUNA) -- Environment Public Authority (EPA) has taken several steps to reduce pollution for the Gulf marine region and has drafted a series of relevant regulations said EPA's General Manager Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad Al-Hmoud Al-Sabah.

The steps mainly include the formation of a permanent national commission for the management of the environmental situation in Kuwait Bay he said during the "GCC Oceans Experts Workshop" held on Monday at Kuwait University Marine Science Center.

The workshop was held under the auspices of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and with the attendance of US Ambassador to Kuwait Douglas Silliman US and GCC environmental experts.

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Sabah said that among such enviorment protection steps were a wide-scale environmental scan and a study of the impact of the disruption of Mishref sewage pumping station on marine environment.

He also commended the new environment protection law which imposes strict penalties against violators and new environmental police squad to follow up and track hazardous activities.

The two-day workshop discusses the GCC states' contributions to the development of the global economy to facilitate marine navigation the participation of the GCC states in international organizations and agreements and treaties targeting marine environment protection.

US ambassador to Kuwait Douglas Silliman stressed the necessity of joint cooperation among all world countries in the field of marine environment protection.

US Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Judith Garber said the United States supports all countries of the world in protecting the environment and hailed the role of Kuwait and GCC states in fighting pollution.

She believed that it is the responsbility of everyone worldide to work for the protection of marine environment and oceans.

The "GCC Oceans Experts Workshop" attracts regional experts advocates policymakers business people and researchers to share experience offer perspectives and demonstrate effective actions to preserve marine environment and to explore initiatives to be presented by GCC members at an international ocean conference due in Washington DC in September 2016.
