Security operation kills 26 rebels in N. Afghanistan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD April 11 (KUNA) -- At least 26 rebels were killed and ten others sustained injuries in a NATO supported ongoing security operation in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province said officials on Monday.

Spokesman for 20th Pamir Unit Col. Ghulam Hazrat told media that the overnight offensive supported by NATO warplanes was conducted in the Panjsher Qahslaq area of the provincial capital and the Erikang locality of Chardara district.

He claimed that several areas were purged of insurgents and the security forces destroyed a tank that had been captured by the fighters. The NATO-backed military action would continue he added.

The security operation in the insecure districts came at a time when security forces have paced up their offensives against the insurgents who frequently target security forces' outposts. (end) sbk.nfm
