Race to Al Raqqah

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) By Jamal Khashoggi

Saudi Arabia and Turkey have missed many opportunities in Syria. If they had intervened earlier many years ago to end the problem the cost would have been less than what they are paying now. Therefore they should not now again miss the opportunities in the race to Al Raqqah because the organisation called ‘Caliphate of Islamic State’ is neither a Caliphate nor a State. It is waiting for someone who fired a bullet of mercy at it.

Now Iran and its allies- Russia the Iraqi militia and the poor regime of Damascus who provided them all with legitimacy to get involved in the war against Syrian revolutionperhaps they are now conducting meetings to decide whether to move to Al Raqqa to liberate it or not?

The move will help them to gain media attention in addition to that gained after taking Palmyra. Otherwise Da’esh will be there to play its assigned role and justify the presence of Russia and Iranian Special Forces and several sectarian outfits. Da’esh is being used to horrify the International Community by keepingthem asking “Who is threatening more Da’esh or Bashar and his regime?”.

Before they finalize their matters I hope that Saudi Arabia Turkey and their allies would move towards Al Raqqah before anyone else takes the initiative. They do not have to provide justifications for everything. They should only think about how to put an end to the terrorist organization threatening their security and providing ground to hatch conspiracies against them.

The irony is that the organization is giving false hopes to some foolish youth who thinks that it is nucleus of an Islamic State stretching to the extent of the eyesight including the sun and moon. That is why we saw themkilling their own security personnel in Al Dawadmi and Al Kharj and carried out suicidal attacks in Ankara and Istanbul.

But the problem of Saudi Arabia and Turkey is with their ally the United States. TheUS decision became contrary because the violation of human rights and war crimes are no longera big issue for thePresident Obamaor important enough to push him to take a brave decision to intervene or at least to provide the international coverage to prompt others to intervene.

Obama is busy protecting the agreement of (5+1) that brings Iran back into the International Community. Perhaps now he is preparing his goodbye speech in which he will say; the world became saferthrough the pact and people should wait for Iran to become a moderate and gentle force. He will tell us that Iran will turnaway from its revolution of interfering in other’s affairsand spreading killing and destruction in the region under the name of the absent Mahdi and other superstitious that have no room in international relations.

Saudi did not wait for Obama in Yemen so why is it waiting for him in Syria? Syrianshave realized their mistakes inwasting their time talking with the Americans about whether “Da’esh first or the regime”. So they now say “We are not going to fight Da’eshalone but Da’esh and the regime together”. Even the writer of this article made the same strategic mistakes by justifying the revolution to fight againstDa’esheven before the US pledge to support them against regime.

The Saudis and Turkish should have pulled the Americansinto the Syrian quagmire under the pretext of fighting Da’esh. The Saudi Kingdom was aware of this when it announced that it is ready to send ground troops to Syria to fight Da’esh. The US welcomed the move but without taking the bait meaning it refused to send in its ground troops or even to provide the other armies with air protectionand instead agreed with Russia to a ceasefire in Syriaa step welcomed by Saudi Arabia itselfbecause something is better than nothing.

The ceasefire continues and a balance between the revolution and the regime is restored. The regime tried to advance to Palmyra which it smoothly reoccupied from Da’esh.

As before they may remember whether it is a wise alternative to move to Al Raqqah and that the choices here are determined by political not military motives. Because the ongoing operation in Daraa against Da’esh which is led by the alliance (including Nosra Front) and supported by special Jordanian forceswith an operation room based in Oman hasraised many details and overlapping issues which probably wouldbe deniedby concerned officials. The operation shows that Da’esh is terrorist organization which kills innocent people and attacks unaware weak targets in Dawadmi Istanbul and Brussels so it is not a regular army or state confronting organized forces.

The Daraa operation may pave the way for more operation rooms to liberate more areas to the south of Al Raqqah along the Jordanian border with Iraq but the major military movement mustcome from the North despite political complications. For instance the national Syrian opposition which earlier refused to cooperate with Washington to implementthe plans of “Da’esh first” or “Da’esh only” began to communicate with the Kurdish forces which have suspicious relations with the regime and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which is considered by Ankarato be a terrorist organization. In fact it is a terrorist organization which recently carried out bombings in Turkey although Washington armed them and encouraged many Arab tribes to ally with them. This led to the creation of Syrian Democratic Forces which are fighting against the Syrian National Coalition whichis close to Riyadh Ankara and Doha.

It is a complicated situation and its details are so contradictory and overlapping that it is difficult to outlinethe reasonsfor standing behind all these complications.

How did Washington do this and why? The situation becomes more complicated if we realize that the Pentagon support for Syrian forces is different from those forces supported by the Department of State and CIA. The image becomes more dim when we consider the fifty plans set to topple Bashar Al Assads regime and refused by Obama and disclosed by former CIA agent.

Saudi and Turkey they do not need lessons in history to understand what is going on between Washington Moscow and Cairo passing through Al-Hasakaand Al-Qamishli because they are only concerned with their security and the protection of the unity of Syria.

Saudi and Turkey know that dividing the country is not in the interests of the Syrian people and must not happen under the current ceasefire and Geneva negotiations. They know that they must support the national opposition to free lands occupied by Da’esh to strengthen their position in the Geneva negotiations and foil the Kurdish plan.

This will help them to engage in a fierce war against the regime even if Bashar Al Jafari the Head of the regime’s delegation has insisted on busying the negotiations with lectures about history geography and arts instead of talking about Assad’s departure as the Syrian people demanded five years ago.
