New York: How do you make an open-top supercar even more desirable? Audi has done just that by upgrading the rorty R8 to create a even sharper version of the Spyder.

The V10-powered drophead which has just made its debut at the New York Car Show has been given the same signature wide black grille and angular slit as the fixed-head version.

The minimalistic cloth hood has a wider deck housing and it can be raised in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Audi says the roof is now much quieter at high speed. The car wears discreet V10 badges and sports a new carbon scoop on the sides.

The Lamborghini-derived engine is the same barnstorming 5.2-litre V10 as fitted to the fixed-head with 540 horsepower on demand. That means a matching zero to 100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h. Audi gives fuel consumption as 11.7 litres per 100 kilometres with a CO2 output of 277 g/km.
