Ford to construct new USD1.6b assembly factory in Mexico

(MENAFN) Ford Motor Co., the American multinational automaker prepares to build a new USD1.6 billion auto assembly plant in Mexico, generating almost 2,800 jobs and shifting small-car production from the United States.

The company unveiled the plant in the San Luis Potosi state without saying specifically what cars it will build there, but reports reveal it'll shift production of the Focus compact and C-Max small gas-electric hybrid.

Auto and other manufacturing jobs having been moving south for years, thus Mexican auto production more than doubled in the past decade, and it's expected to rise another 50 percent to just under 5 million vehicles by 2022.

However, Ford's announcement drew a strong response from Republican front-runner Donald Trump, who called the automaker's move an absolute disgrace, as he has railed about corporate America moving jobs to Mexico.
