Turkish jets hit PKK targets in northern Iraq


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISTANBUL April 7 (KUNA) -- Turkish warplanes have carried out attacks on bases of the separatist Kurdish organization the PKK in northern Iraq Turkey's Chief of Staff announced in a statement Thursday.

Ten F-16 and F-4 jets bombed the PKK positions in Qandil where the group the Workers Party of Kurdistan (also known as the PKK) has its main headquarters the statement said adding that a number of caves and shelters in Zap region were destroyed.

In a related development Turkish security sources said a Turkish soldier died and four others were wounded in attacks by the PKK in Diyarbakir and Hakkari cities southeastern Turkey.

According to Anadolu Agency gunmen of the banned organization opened fire on the soldier's car in Bismil district in Diyarbakir which led to his death noting that security forces in the region searched the city for the culprits.

It also reported that three soldiers and a police officer were injured in a rocket attack that targeted them during the ongoing operations against the outlawed Kurdish movement in Hakkari.

The autonomy-seeking PKK breached a two-year ceasefire in July reigniting a conflict that has claimed more than 40000 lives mainly Kurdish since 1984. The PKK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey the United States and the European Union.(end) ta.haq
