Oman- Duqm port RO77mn phase 3 development contract signed

The Special Economic Zone Authority of Duqm (Sezad) signed an agreement on Wednesday to implement the third package for the development of Port of Duqm.

The project is expected to cost RO77.1mn and will be completed within 36 months of the awarding date.

This package covers construction of roads infrastructure and buildings at the commercial pre-gate gates and the inspection zone the truck registration building buildings at the commercial zone and two helipads a statement said on Wednesday.

H E Yahya al Jabri chairman of Sezad signed the agreement with Khalid Salah Farahat general manager of United Gulf Construction Co WLL which will carry out the project.

The Kuwaiti company has over 40 years of experience in specialised construction.

Speaking after signing the agreement H E Jabri said "The agreement on the third package asserts the government's commitment to complete the Duqm port project and implement the many infrastructure projects that have been approved at Sezad.'

"Duqm port is one of the most important drivers for Sezad. It is a multifunctional port that aims to support the economic diversification efforts of the Omani government. The port is distinguished by its strategic geographical location close to international shipping lines as well as the African and Asian markets. It can also attract various companies due to the quality infrastructure projects it entertains and the advantages provided by investors at the zone. These advantages contribute to attracting many international lines to the port as well as developing many commercial and industrial projects. It also promotes the role played by the sultanate in the logistics sector" he added.

Jabri hailed the advanced infrastructure at the port. He explained that the total lengths of the port's breakwaters reach about 8.7km while the depth of the harbor's basin reaches 18m. He pointed out that the length of the access channel to the port is 19m and this enables that the port to receive huge container ships. H E Jabri stated that the port has enough space for future expansion and this enables it to host more than one oil refinery in addition to many heavy industry and petrochemical projects.
