Japan, China agree to implement UN sanctions on N. Korea

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO April 5 (KUNA) -- Chief nuclear envoys of Japan and China agreed Tuesday to firmly implement the UN Security Council resolutions concerning sanctions against North Korea the Chinese representative said.

"We agreed to closely exchange views on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the implementation of the UN resolutions" China's special representative for Korean Peninsula affairs Wu Dawei told reporters after his talks in Tokyo with Kimihiro Ishikane director general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.

The UN Security Council adopted its harshest-ever resolution punishing Pyongyang last month for its fourth nuclear test in January and subsequent launch of a long-range ballistic rocket early February.

Wu who also doubles as China's chief representative to the six-party talks aimed at resolving North Korea's nuclear weapons program said the two top nuclear envoys also discussed the resumption of the long-stalled multilateral talks which also involve North Korea South Korea the US and Russia.

The six-party dialogues have been suspended since late 2008. China is traditionally North Korea's closest ally and a major economic benefactor.

China has been mustering diplomatic efforts toward the resumption but Japan South Korea and the US have demanded the North show sincerity about denuclearization through concrete actions before such talks can take place. (end) mk.tg
