Norwegian duo leads way into main draw in Doha


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Doha: Morten Kvamsdal and Christian Sandlie Sorum carried on their development as a team when they won two from two on the opening day of the Qatar Open yesterday at Al Gharafa Sports Club.

The Norwegian pair began with a 2-1 (21-19 12-21 15-6) win over Estonia’s Kusti Nolvak and Mart Tiisaar and then followed up by defeating Austrian pair Peter Eglseer and Daniel Mullner 2-0 that books them a place in the main draw that starts today.

Australian pair Bo Soderberg and Cole Durant also reached the main draw after winning two from two.

They started with a 2-0 victory over Kazakhstan’s Artem Petrossyants and Yegor Dmitriyev and then completed qualification by defeating Hasan Huseyin Mermer and Sefa Urlu of Turkey 2-1 (21-13 13-21 15-12).

The world’s best men’s Beach Volleyball duos will be seeking to enhance their dreams of playing in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the main draw.

The top three teams in the eight pools (24 total teams) will advance from pool play to the single-elimination knockout rounds.

On Wednesday and Thursday will be the single elimination rounds with the quarterfinals also on Thursday. The semi-finals and medal matches and awarding ceremony will conclude the event on Friday evening. The winning team at this year’s Qatar Open will take a share of the $11000 first-place prize and 500 points the silver $8000 and 450 points the bronze $6000 and 400 points and fourth place $4500 and 450 points.The Peninsula
