Venezuela charges Interpol detective for smuggling drugs

BOGOTA Colombia: The head detective for Venezuela's office of Interpol is being charged with smuggling drugs to the Dominican Republic.

The Venezuelan Attorney General*s Office said Saturday in a statement that Interpol*s Eliecer Garcia coordinated a shipment of 349 kilograms (769 pounds) of cocaine found hidden in luggage by police on the Caribbean island last month.

Authorities say businessman Pablo Cardenas was the owner of the shipment sent from the city of Barquisimeto on a Cessna aircraft. He and Garcia have been arrested along with five national guard sergeants and three security agents at Barquisimeto's airport.

Venezuela is a major transit zone for cocaine and the U.S. has charged or targeted with sanctions several top military officials for their involvement in the drug trade.
