DOHA: H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari Adviser to the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s candidate for the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has underlined that culture can serve as a locomotive for sustainable development and driving the global economy reports Qatar News Agency from Bordeaux in France.

He made the remarks on Thursday night in his capacity as President of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held over two days under the theme ‘Role of Culture in the field of Business’ at Forum d’Avignon in the city of Bordeaux southwestern France. Ministers of culture from European Union countries Bordeaux Mayor Alan Juppe intellectuals economists and researchers were present.

Dr Al Kawari said the sustainable development goals beyond 2015 consider culture a driving force in terms of global trade which is not limited to material goods but also depend on vibrant creative economy which includes several applications.

He said this type of the economy is known for its ability to generate enormous profits create citizen action help the development of exports and as a cure for many of today’s global problems.

Dr Al Kawari called on world countries especially those in the South to focus on creative industries in their development strategies.

He stressed that rich cultural resources and creative competencies available in the developing countries can be a driving force for economic development and contribute to the global economy.

Dr Al Kawari said the existence of a relationship between culture and trade is highlighted in Unesco’s preamble. He said the 13th UNCTAD Congress in Doha had highlighted the importance of business and creative industries particularly the cultural ones. Dr Al Kawari called on the Forum d’Avignon to customise World Day of Culture to conduct a dialogue in which the world’s cultures unite against extremism and terrorism a proposal that was welcomed by the participants at the forum.The Peninsula
