Turkey- US stocks record monthly quarterly gains


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >U.S. stocks closed mixed Thursday but recorded monthly and quarterly gains.

The Dow decreased 31 points to close the first quarter of the year at 17685. The S&P declined 4 points to close at 2059 and the Nasdaq rose less than one point to end at 4869.

The stock market in March had its biggest monthly gain since October with the three indices adding approximately 7 percent each.

The Dow rose by 1.5 percent in the first quarter of 2016 the S&P 500 had a 0.8 percent increase but the Nasdaq fell by nearly 3 percent -- its worst quarter since September.

Meanwhile the dollar fell 8.5 percent during the month – its worst monthly performance since September 2010.

Oil prices recorded a 14 percent increase in March. American benchmark West Texas Intermediate traded at $38.17 per barrel at the end of trading Thursday while international benchmark Brent crude was at $40.16 a barrel.
