Qatar- Central Market received 1200 tonnes of local vegetables in February

DOHA: Locally-produced vegetables that came on the Central Market in February had a share of 12 percent (or 1200 tonnes) in the total which was 10000 tonnes. Some 10000 tonnes of vegetables including locally-produced and those imported were brought to the Central Market.

India was the leading exporter with a 31 percent share in the total followed by Pakistan at 18 percent.

Jordanian vegetables contributed 13 percent to the total one percent more than Egyptian produce which had a share of 12 percent.

A monthly report for February 2016 issued by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce gave the above details. The other countries from where the vegetables were sourced were Saudi Arabia which contributed eight percent China five percent and Lebanon only one percent.

The prices of vegetables were up by two percent on average in the month as compared to January 2016 the previous month. On year-on-year basis the vegetables available on the Central Market became cheaper by three percent in February. The price of Saudi khusa rose 40 percent from QR2.5 per kg in January to QR3.5 per kg in February followed by Jordanian lettuce Saudi and Qatari cucumber whose prices increased by 25 percent from QR4 per Kg to QR5 a kg during the period. Jordanian tomato Saudi cabbage and Indian onion witnessed a steep fall of 17 percent from QR3 per kg in January to QR2.5 in February.

The prices of Chinese ginger and Jordanian capsicum also decreased by 10 and nine percent respectively.

A large quantity of fruits of deferent verities about 3865 tonnes were taken to the Central Market in last month. Egypt was leading among top five fruits exporting countries to Qatar followed by Philippine. Lebanon secured third position however India and China ranked fourth and fifth respectively.

Prices of fruits declined seven percent in an average on year-on-year comparison and three percent in month-on-month during aforementioned study period.

Prices of Lebanese pear declined 23 percent from QR17.50 per kg in last month to QR13.50 in previous month. Prices of Indian coconuts fell 20 percent from QR2.5 to QR2 per packet. Prices of Pakistani orange (Santara) has also fallen QR.5 per kg from QR4.5 to QR4.

Only three fruits including Egyptian guava Philippine banana and Indian pomegranate witnessed a price hike ranging between seven to 11 percent. The prices of Filipino banana and Indian pomegranate rose by 11 percent from QR4.5 to QR5 and QR9 to QR10 respectively. However the prices of Egyptian guava increased from QR7 to QR7.5.The Peninsula
