New therapy in Dubai to treat cancer

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Dubai Hospital has used immunotherapy to treat two Emirati businessmen suffering from cancer.

"Treatment of a patient will cost as much as $1 million (Dh3.6 million) and the results were positive and promising after the tumours vanished completely" said Dr Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi executive director of Dubai Hospital.

A report carried by the Arabic daily Al Bayan on Tuesday quoted Dr Al Jasmi as saying: Immunotherapy is a biological therapy designed to stimulate or restore the ability of the body's immune (natural internal defense) system to fight infection and disease.

"It is very successful in treating skin and lung cancer" he said noting that it works on stimulating the immune system to resist cancerous cells and the two patients who were treated by this technique are in normal condition after being fully recovered.

"Immunotherapy is still confined to a number of countries in the world and has been endorsed by the world health authorities while international researches and studies are still going on to discover whether it is useful for use in other types of cancer" he said. "The UAE is the first Arab country to use immunotherapy." he said.
