Kuwait- Official warns of sharp rise in diabetes


(MENAFN- Arab Times) Director of Health Affairs in the Ministry of Health Dr Abeer Al-Bahwa warned of a sharp increase in diabetes in Kuwait and other GCC countries, adding the rate of diabetes in Kuwait rose to 23.1 percent in 2015. She added the global rate of adults living with diabetes was 9 percent in 2014, which necessitated intensified awareness to curtail the disease as per the expectations of World Health Organization, which also predicted diabetes will occupy the seventh place among chronic diseases responsible for deaths worldwide.

She indicated diabetes will be the cause of 50 percent of deaths in the next ten years if concerned authorities do not take the precautionary measures to control it. As regards measures to control the elements that cause diabetes, Al-Bahwa declared a comprehensive program to tackle the major causes of chronic diseases, which covers obesity and consumption of fatty meals. She also said the official activities marking World Health Day will be launched Monday with a marathon entitled 'Be Active' at Al-Shaheed Garden opposite the Commercial Tower, besides several competitions and awards to celebrate the occasion.
