Qatar- QU and Maersk centre sign deal

Qatar University and Maersk Oil Research and Technology Centre officials at the agreement signing ceremony.

Doha: A collaborative agreement was signed yesterday between the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University College of Engineering and Maersk Oil Research and Technology Centre to study the advanced application of sand plugging to isolate and stimulate specific zones in hydrocarbon wells.

The project will use computational simulation and experimental investigation to visualise and test how sand dunes and plugs are formed in an annulus when deploying sand particles through a nozzle in an inner pipe. The learnings can be applied to support reservoir management.

The agreement was signed by Prof Mariam Ali Al Maadeed Vice-President Research and Graduate Studies QU and Abdulrahman Al Emadi Head of the centre in the presence of QU President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham College Dean Dr Khalifa Al Khalifa officials from both institutions and college faculty and staff.

Researchers from the centre will work with QU students and faculty on the project which is expected to last one year. Prof Al Maadeed said: “The agreement emphasizes QU’s continued determination to find solutions to the challenges facing society. Through this we seek to promote common relationship with the centre and expand ways of cooperation in scientific research and development. This would serve the domestic industry particularly the oil and gas industry in line with national priorities towards the achievement of a knowledge-based economy.”

Al Emadi said: “Maersk Oil is proud to be expanding its long-standing partnership with QU. This project is another example of our cooperation with academia to develop innovative technology and applicable solutions to industry challenges and deliver the greatest possible value to Qatar from its natural resources.”

Dr Al Khalifa said: “The agreement will result in observable benefits to QU in particular and Qatar in general and contribute to strengthening collaboration between the two parties towards sustainable and long-term solutions in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the national research and development strategies.”The Peninsula
