DOHA: The Ministry of Public Health Finance Ministry Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Qatar’s medical offices overseas are being linked online.

This is to ensure quick travel of Qatari citizens needing specialist treatment abroad. Qatar has medical offices in a number of places overseas including London Washington Bonn Cairo and Thailand.

The idea behind interlinking the ministries of health finance HMC and the overseas medical offices online is to make sure that the procedures to send a Qatari patient for treatment to a foreign land are quick. “This way the waiting time will be reduced and admission of a patient to a healthcare facility abroad will be quick” said Dr Ghalia Al Harmi Director of Medical Relations for Overseas Treatment at the Ministry of Public Health. Swift interaction among different bodies would ensure that the financial administrative and medical procedures to send patients abroad would be made easier she said.

The online system would also help in taking appointments with foreign healthcare providers fast.

Dr Ghalia said there would soon be a list of new health service providers abroad where patients will be sent for treatment.

According to her the period of treatment of nationals abroad will be reduced to one month and it would be extended based only on treatment plan submitted by the doctors concerned and the extension will be decided by a committee based on medical reports.

All patients who are being treated overseas for more than six months without recovery will be brought back for treatment at HMC. And only those patients for whom treatment is not available locally will be sent abroad said Dr Ghalia. The government is committed to providing best medical treatment to its people she told Al Sharq.
