Israeli atrocity

One more case of Israeli brutality has come to light with the gruesome killing of a wounded Palestinian assailant by an Israeli soldier in the West Bank after a video of the shooting went viral. The clip which was aired even by Israeli channels shows an Israeli soldier shooting a wounded Palestinian assailant in the head as he lay on the ground after stabbing another soldier his knife lying beyond his reach. It was another eloquent and grim example of how Israel has been using excessive and brutal force in the wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence that erupted in October. Israel has been justifying its gruesome killings of Palestinians calling its action a response to ‘acts of terrorism’ but the western world has failed to notice Israeli excesses and condemn them.

The video created an international outcry and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to respond and at least show it does not condone such acts. A military spokesman said the soldier was being “detained on suspicion of murder.” Netanyahu said the soldier’s behaviour was not in keeping with his army’s values and a army officials said that the shooting was being treated with great severity.

The current wave of violence has left 200 Palestinians and 28 Israelis dead. Most of the deaths on the Palestinian side are caused by the Israeli army with their excessive reaction. The army has been following a policy of eliminating any Palestinian who attacks an Israeli soldier or civilian even if these attacks are minor. Interestingly the latest murder has triggered a debate in Israel about their forces’ response. Human rights groups and leftists in the country have been highly critical of their government but unfortunately Netanyahu has been following a hardline and extremist policy both to punish Palestinians and kill the idea of a two-state solution.

Meanwhile in a victory for Palestinians the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday adopted a resolution to compile a ‘blacklist’ of Israeli and international companies who do business with illegal Israeli settlements. In addition the Council also adopted three other resolutions -- first on the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination; second on violation of Palestinian human rights like closures by the Israeli occupation forces in areas under occupation as well as home demolitions violations of religious sites and extrajudicial killings carried out by the IOF and third for enacting proper investigative systems to ensure accountability for violations carried out by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory. Though these resolutions will in no way persuade Israel to refrain from such crimes they at least give a ray of hope that the world is still noticing the Israeli atrocities.
