Qatar- Steingruber grabs gold at World Cup Series

DOHA: Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber yesterday maintained her vault domination by clinching a gold medal while Qatari gymnasts also impressed on the opening day of the finals at Ninth Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Doha.

As many as five finals were decided in the three-day event which started on Thursday with the qualification rounds.

Watched by a good number of gymnastics enthusiasts at the iconic Aspire Dome Steingruber looked at her best in the women’s vault final as she faced little difficulty in claiming the top spot. The 24-year old who has several triumphs to her name including the European all-round title collected 14712 points to finish ahead of Teja Belak of Slovenia who compiled 14.337 for a silver medal. Tjasa Kysselef also from Slovenia secured bronze medal with 14087 points.

In the men’s pommel horse final Harutyun Merdinyan of Armenia emerged victorious after accumulating 15675 points dethroning Stepko Oleg of Azerbaijan who was defending his last year’s title.

Robert Seligman of Croatia ended up in second place with a tally of 15300 points while Oleg had to be content with the bronze medal after he completed his display with a total of 15000 points.

Although Qatar’s Ahmed Al Dayani failed to grab a medal the 23-ytear-old amused home fans with impressive moves and finished in seventh spot with 13475 points in the pommel horse final.

Qatar’s Farah Mahmoud also earned applause from home fans in the women’s uneven bars final while securing 10250 points.

Jonna Adlerteg of Sweden won gold medal in the competition with 14925 points while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade (14925) and Portugal’s Filipa Martins (13625) won silver and bronze medals respectively.

The men’s floor final saw Diego Hypolito winning the title with a narrow margin. The Brazilian’s tally of 15175 points was just 175 points more that second-placed Rob Klavora of Slovenia. Sam Oldham of Great Britain occupied third place on the podium with 14925 points.

Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece reigned supreme in the last final of the day by gaining 15875 points in men’s floor for the gold medal. Armenia’s Vahagn Davtyan and his compatriot Artur Tovmasyan grabbed silver and bronze medals respectively.

Several dignitaries and heads of top gymnastics bodies also visited Aspire Dome and were left impressed with arrangements and facilities at state-of-the-art venue.

“This is one of my favourite events because of the arrangements” European Union of Gymnastics President Geogres Guelzec told reporters.

“The Qatar Gymnastics Federation is holding this event successfully since years. Hospitality has been good as always.”

“Qatar has gained a good experience and I am confident they will host the best World Championship in 2018.”

The event will culminate today with as many as six titles are scheduled to be decided.
