ABU DHABI 24th March 2016 (WAM) -- The countdown to the UAE's space mission to Mars has begun with the announcement that the probe will be launched from Japan in 2020 said a UAE daily.

"Japanese multinational company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build the rocket to launch the space probe" said Gulf News in an editorial.

"On board the rocket will be the hopes of millions of people in the Arab world entering the arena of space exploration traditionally dominated by a handful of countries over the past 50 years.

"The probe to Mars will be an inspiration to the youth not just from the UAE but the entire region. While the red planet has been studied in text books for many years the UAE has now made it possible for the youth to take part in projects like these that challenge the human mind and conquer new frontiers in space. And it will give a boost to science and technology in the region.

"Nasa aims to put astronauts on the red planet in the 2030s and is now studying the impact of a two-year expedition on the body and mind. The UAE mission will probe for signs of life and the potential for habitation on Mars.

"The probe will also give new hope for humankind. On a planet that is being ravaged by pollution water woes and rapidly depleting natural resources we are looking for another potential planet to live in after Earth becomes uninhabitable over time. Nasa's findings reveal that Mars has liquid water just below its surface in the form of permafrost suggesting that it could support life. The UAE's Mars Hope mission will provide a bigger picture of the planet's weather conditions and topography.

"The sky is truly not the limit for a country like the UAE" concluded the Dubai-based daily.
