Qatar national identity seminar concludes


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Speakers at the National Identity Seminar that ended yesterday.

DOHA: A two-day seminar on Qatar national identity which ended here yesterday has recommended to put emphasis on school curricula in helping form national identity.

Among the other recommendations were to help raise pride in “our identity” and the Arabic language .

“Strengthen the role of language as an essential component in Arab values customs and traditions” was another recommendation.

Open up intellectually and culturally and interact with others without compromising the fundamentals of one’s identity was yet another recommendation.

Balance foreign and local cultures and benefit from the experiences of “brotherly countries” on identity. Raise the importance of Arabic language and translate foreign language books into Arabic so that children read nothing but Arabic. And researchers in science and literature must be encouraged. The set of recommendations also urged the authorities concerned to enrich the Arabic content in international telecommunication networks as they are key sources of information.

The seminar was organized by Qatar Heritage and Identity Centre and exclusively sponsored by Vodafone Qatar. It was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Dr Khalid Youssef Al Mulla Executive Director of Qatar Heritage and Identity Centre concluded the second day by honouring the participants.

On the second day speakers discussed a number of topics on how to preserve Arabic identity amidst the developments taking place in the region in general and Qatar in particular.

“Identity is facing many challenges including globalization on one hand and language culture and historical heritage on the other. Accordingly it is necessary to revise our understanding of identity when related to issues of cultural heritage such as the Arabic language. Thankfully this is exactly what the Arab states did and particularly Qatar.” Said Dr. Fatima Al Suwaidi Vice President of the Qatar University Department of Arabic Language discussing ‘Foreign Schools and National Identity’The Peninsula
