Turkey- Myanmar: Suu Kyi tipped to take FM post in new cabinet

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Myanmar’s newly elected President Htin Kyaw on Tuesday nominated party leader Aung San Suu Kyi for at least a minister post in his new cabinet scheduled to take power April 1 with party members tipping the powerful Foreign Ministry post as her likely destination.

Suu Kyi has been unable to take the presidential post due to a clause in the constitution -- that many suspect was aimed at her -- banning anyone with foreign relatives occupying the position. Htin Kyaw is seen as her proxy.

A senior member of the election winning National League for Democracy claimed Tuesday that Suu Kyi has decided to take the Foreign Ministry post as the military's nominee for the position hardliner Myint Swe has already taken the vice-presidential position.

“Since the military has a hardline VP [vice-president] in the cabinet the party decided she [Suu Kyi) should take a post” said Myo Yan Naung Thein secretary of the NLD’s central research team and a director of the Bayda Institute that provides political training to NLD members.

“I am sure she [will] take at least the foreign ministerial post” Myo Yan Naung Thein told Anadolu Agency.

“As Foreign Minister she would be a member of the National Defense and Security Council” he said. "Then she can talk to the military chief for more understanding of each other at the regular meetings of the council.

The 11-member NDSC is formed of the president two vice presidents two parliament speakers the Foreign Minister the military chief the deputy army chief and three key ministers appointed by the army chief.

Suu Kyi is one of 18 nominees for 21 ministries announced by the NLD Tuesday for the Htin Kyaw-led cabinet Union Parliament speaker Mann Win Khaing Than said earlier Monday.

She is down to take one of four ministerial posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Education Ministry of President Office or the Ministry of Energy and Electricity.

Naung Thein said that as a cabinet member Suu Kyi would be able to discuss daily matters with the president.

Parliament will vote on the positions Thursday.
