Arab League rejects calls for federalism in Syria

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >The Arab League on Monday rejected calls for federalism in Kurdish-controlled areas in northern Syria.

Last week the PYD terrorist organization declared federalism in areas it controls in northern Syria.

“The Arab League rejects such secessionist calls which harms Syria’s unity” Ahmed ben Helli deputy secretary-general of the Arab League told reporters. “Syria’s unity and territorial integrity are a main principle of the Arab League.”

Ben Helli voiced hope that the UN-sponsored talks in Geneva between the Syrian regime and the opposition will yield a political solution to the six-year conflict.

“Any calls by Syrians or non-Syrians regarding the country’s unity and territorial integrity are rejected” he added.

Since March 2011 the Syrian opposition has been calling for ending the four-decade rule of the Assad dynasty in Syria. The Bashar al-Assad regime however cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity pushing the Arab country into a vicious civil war.

According to a tally compiled by Anadolu Agency more than 361000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict erupted in 2011.
