Final batch of gymnasts arrives in Doha today


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A gymnast trains at QGF Training Centre in Al Laqta District in Doha ahead of Artistic Gymnastics Challenge Cup starting on Thursday.

Doha: With only two days to go before the beginning of the Doha Artistic Gymnastics Challenge Cup at Aspire Academy of Sports Excellence the final batch of participating delegations are scheduled to arrive in Doha today.

Organised by the Qatar Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in coordination with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) the event will be staged from March 24 to 26.

The tournament will feature the participation of over 100 gymnasts from 33 countries including China Cuba Argentina Armenia Sweden Azerbaijan Brazil Costa Rica Croatia Finland Slovenia Switzerland Syria Turkey Vietnam and hosts Qatar.

The players to participate in the three-day event began their training sessions at the QGF Training Centre in Al Laqta District in Doha while the official training hall of the tournament at Aspire Academy will be available for the participants from tomorrow.

The QGF President Ali Al Hitmi met with the Qatari Gymnasts to compete in the $50000 event.

After the meeting Al Hitmi said that he motivated the Qatari trio of Mahmoud al Saadi Ahmad al Dayani and Farah Tariq to do their best in the event to feature the participation of the world best gymnasts.

QGF Secretary General Mohammad Al Jaber said that the event was a real Challenge for the QGF since its first edition 9 years ago.

“From the first edition the QGF proved its ability to host the major events that why the state of Qatar on the rights to host the 2018 World Gymnastics Championships” Al Jaber added.

The QGF Assistant Secretary General and Tournament Director Abeer Al Boainain said that Doha is ready to host the event to begin at Aspire Academy on Thursday.

“The participate of three Qatari players in the event is a positive step forward on the way to develop gymnastics in the state of Qatar as the World Challenge Cup features the participation of the world best gymnasts” Al Boainain added.

On the other hand the Organising Committee of the 2016 World challenge Cup will organize a press conference at Aspire Academy on to present the star athletes to participate in the event.

The list of participating gymnasts includes China’s Zou Kai who claimed three gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He also won two more gold medals and one bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Brazil’s Diego Hypolito will also be seen in Doha during the event. The Brazilian star gymnast won two bronze medals in World Cups in Japan 2011 and China 2014.

The Women’s competitions will feature the participation of Romania’s Catalina Ponor Larisa Iordache and Diana Bulimar. Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber IlariaKäslin and Stefanie Siegenthaler will also compete in the three-day event.
