DOHA: Lessons on the importance of water and electricity conservation and ways to save them are to become part of school curriculum in the country.

Teachers are to be trained in utility conservation methods to help spread conservation culture among students.

Students are to be taught the significance of conserving water and electricity starting from their school buildings. Teachers and the taught are to be told about the importance of maintenance of electrical devices and appliances as part of ‘Tarshid’ culture.

The Ministry Education and Higher Education and utility distributor Kahramaa inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday to make the latter’s utility conservation programme (‘Tarshid’) a part of school education system. On behalf of Kahramaa its head of water and power conservation programme Engineer Abdulaziz Ahmed Al Hammadi signed the MoU.

The Education Ministry was represented by Khalifa Al Dirham director of the office of Independent Schools at the signing ceremony.

Fawzia Al Khater director of Education Institute at education ministry attended. She said water and electricity conservation is key to reducing their use and ‘Tarshid’ is part of the lofty goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.

The MoU calls for continued cooperation between the education ministry and Kahramaa on the issue of ‘Tarshid’.

‘Tarshid’ is enshrined as one of the lofty goals of the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 which is the roadmap of Qatar’s future development and its emergence as an advanced country with a knowledge-based economy.

Kahramaa launched ‘Tarshid’ programme a few years ago with the aim of reducing the consumption of water and electricity within a targeted period.

The programme is paying rich dividends and has been quite successful as already the use of both the precious utilities is down quite significantly.

Kahramaa has signed deals with a number of institutions to promote Tarshid. They include research institutions and government and private offices. The Peninsula
