UAE- Fire in Mina Zayed fruit and vegetable market quickly doused

ABU DHABI 21st March 2016 (WAM) -- Civil Defence and quick response teams in Abu Dhabi successfully controlled a fire that erupted in sixteen shops in the fruit and vegetable market in Mina Zayed in Abu Dhabi early on Sunday morning with no injuries or casualties.

The fire extinguishing operations were overseen directly by Major-General Jassem Muhammad Al Marzouqui Civil Defence General Commander-in-chief at the Ministry of Interior and Colonel Tarek Saleh Shareef Acting Deputy Director-General of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi with the attendance of Colonel Ahmed Saif bin Zeitoun Al Muhairi Acting Director of the Capital Police Directorate.

Colonel Abdullah Rashid Al Zaabi Acting Director of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi said that the civil defence and quick response teams moved immediately to the fire site after receiving a notice from the Operations Room at 5 a.m. Sunday. The teams from Al Mina Street Mina Zayed and Al Madina civil defence stations in addition to the quick response unit in the Al Falah centre rapidly began their tasks of extinguishing and controlling the fire and preventing it from extending to neighbouring buildings and adjacent commercial shops.

He added that according to their observations the fire was classified as 'upper intermediate' and the investigations are ongoing to find out the circumstances and cause of the fire. He stressed the importance of abiding by safety and prevention requirements in buildings throughout the city.

Traffic patrols and police teams from the Al Madina Police Station participated in logistical support. The Air Support Department at the General Directorate for Security Support at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior participated with their drones. The drones transmitted live pictures to support decision makers on the ground and transmitted images to the Operations Room to assess the logistics conditions and resources distribution.
