Japan provides USD5 mil. aid for Syrian people

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO March 21 (KUNA) -- Japan will extend USD five million in emergency grant aid for supporting people in mainly hard-to-reach areas in Syria the Foreign Ministry announced Monday.

"The aid is to provide support such as providing food and non-food items improving water sanitation health and medical care as well as implementing risk education and clearance activities of explosive remnants of war in besieged areas in Syria where urgent assistance is needed" the ministry said in a press release.

The money will be provided through the International Committee of the Red Cross and United Nations Mine Action Service of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations it added.

Major powers have recently hammered out a truce to halt hostilities in Syria. However it has been repeatedly breached. Thousands of Syrian civilians have fallen victims of the five-year bloody conflict that has claimed more than 250000 lives and left around nine million Syrians either homeless relocated or refugees in neighboring and European countries. The internationally mediated truce is also intended to secure delivery of relief supplies to civilians on Syrian territories. (end) mk.haq
