UAE- Cowardly senseless attack in Sinai: paper

ABU DHABI 21st March 2016 (WAM) -- A UAE newspaper has said that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

"The terrorist attack that targeted a security checkpoint in the Safa neighbourhood south of the city of El Arish in northern Sinai in which several Egyptian police personnel were killed and others injured is an insane act that is highly condemnable" said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Monday.

"Sadly even ambulances were subjected to heavy gunfire as they attempted to reach the wounded to offer medical treatment. Egypt can draw comfort from the fact that it has the backing of the entire world in its attempts to combat merciless militants.

"The UAE and Egypt share the same opinion that terrorism is a threat to the nations to the reputation of the tolerant Islam and to all people.

"The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has rightly condemned these criminal attacks and affirmed its full solidarity with the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt in its fight against terrorist organisations and its efforts to move forward to achieving stability and defeating terrorism.

"It is well known that Egypt holds a special place in the hearts of UAE nationals and residents. The relations between the two nations are deep-rooted thanks to the strong foundation laid by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

"There are multi-dimensional links connecting the two countries and the two peoples especially in the light of the huge presence of the Egyptian community in various parts of the UAE.

"Egypt's stability is essential for the security of the entire region. el-Sisi is a strong and determined leader who is doing his best to bring stability back on the streets of Egypt. He deserves all the support that the international community is offering him now.

"The recent decision by Egypt's military commanders to forge a unified command for all armed forces in Sinai also makes perfect sense.

"The commanders' move and President el-Sisi's firm declaration earlier that "we will not leave Sinai for the terrorists" send a reassuring message to all Egyptians that terrorists will find no place to hide.

"There is little doubt that the cowardly acts by terrorists will not affect the strong willingness of the Egyptian people and leadership to continue to resolutely counter terrorism.

"As the UAE statement correctly suggests the international community should unite ranks and collaborate in carrying out its responsibilities in the fight against terrorist groups and extremist organisations" concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
