Qatar- PM to patronise identity seminar

Doha: Under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani Qatar’s Second National Identity Seminar starts tomorrow under the theme ‘The Role of Educational Institutions in Promoting National Identity’.

The two-day event is being organised by Qatar Heritage and Identity Centre and sponsored exclusively by Vodafone Qatar.

It will be held at Sharq Village and Spa.

The seminar will host eminent local and international scholars academics and speakers and will highlight national identity which is a key element in any community in the era of globalisation and amid rapid changes and developments being witnessed by today’s world said Dr Khalid Youssef Al Mulla Executive Director of the centre.

During a joint press conference with Mohammed Al Yami Director External Affairs Vodafone Qatar at the Palm Tower on Thursday Al Mulla stressed that “it has become necessary to highlight the concept of Qatari identity in particular and the Arab-Islamic identity in general.

“It is also important to instil the physical and non-physical dimensions of these concepts in the minds of the youth.

“Being proud of our own identity and loyal to our beloved country does not mean that we become racist and reject others’ identities.

“On the contrary it would help us positively interact with and become more open to other cultures and identities. Qatar has promoted and stressed the importance of national identity through Qatar National Vision 2030” said Al Mulla.

He expressed gratitude to the Premier for patronising the event for the second time and thanked Cultural Village-Katara for constant support and Vodafone for full sponsorship of the event.

Al Yami said: “Vodafone Qatar is seeking to revive and promote Qatari heritage which contributes to strengthening the concept and value of our national identity”.

He expressed gratitude to Al Mulla for inviting Vodafone to be the exclusive partner and sponsor of the second edition of the seminar which marks fruitful partnership with the centre. The seminar will discuss issues related to the preservation of national identity and heritage.

In four sessions participants will focus discussions on topics related to ‘Language and identity’; ‘School curriculum and its impact on national identity’; ‘The role of demographic changes in identity preservation’; and ‘Family and identity’.

Experiences of some countries such as like Turkey and Morocco in areas like education and identity and multilingualism and identity will be presented by specialists from both countries. Issues such as the role of private schools in preserving national identity will also be highlighted by researchers.

The seminar is expected to come out with recommendations to help preserve and consolidate Qatar’s national identity under the current demographic changes and multicultural status of the country.The Peninsula
