Tunisian rider dies after crash

DOHA: Tunisian rider Taoufik Gattouchi (pictured) died following a multi-bike crash during a support race at the season’s opening round of the MotoGP World Championship organisers said yesterday.

The crash took place on turn 3 during lap 10 of the 15-lap of the Losail 600 Cup a support event for amateur riders a statement released by organisers said.

The race was immediately ‘red flagged’ following the crash.

The 49-year-old was given ‘track-side medical care’ before being airlifted to Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) the statement released by Losail Circuit Sports Club (LCSC) said. The unfortunate crash took place on Friday night the first day of official free practice in MotoGP Moto2 and Moto3 sessions held under lights at Losail International Circuit.

“Following an incident during this evening´s (18th March) Losail 600 Cup support race at the Losail International Circuit it is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of Tunisian rider Taoufik Gattouchi” a statement released yesterday said.The Peninsula
