Suicide bomber kills 4 in central Istanbul


(MENAFN- Asia Times) BaloStreet after the suicide bomb attack on Saturday

Gov. Vasip Sahin ordered an investigation into the attack which took place on Balo Street in front of the local governor's office of Beyoglu.

The pedestrian street was completely sealed off and police officers and ambulances were deployed to the area.

Police helicopters were circling overhead and television footage showed people running from the area.

According to a CNNTurk reporter on the scene the suicide attacker was on his way to the actual target when the bomb accidentally went off in front of a kebab restaurant.

Among the 36 injured were 12 foreigners and a child.Three of them are Israeli citizens.

Seven of the victims are in critical condition in various hospitals.

Istiklal Street is home to cafes restaurants and foreign consulate buildings.. On March 16 the German consulate and school were shut down due to security threats.

A senior Turkish official saidinitial findings indicate that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party or an affiliate carried out the bombing.
