Maersk Oil Qatar Professor in STEM Leadership appointed

Doha: Dr Hussein Alnuweiri (pictured) Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) has been appointed as the first holder of the Maersk Oil Qatar Professorship in STEM Leadership for the next two years.

Dr Alnuweiri was awarded the position in recognition of his cutting-edge research and contributions to educational outreach to young Qataris.

The STEM professorship is part of the Dhia: Engineering Leaders partnership between Maersk Oil Qatar and TAMUQ developing local capacity in science and engineering teaching while inspiring the next generation of young engineers and scientists in support of Qatar National Vision 2030 through practical skills development programmes.

“Dr Alnuweiri’s rich portfolio of STEM education and other outreach activities made him an obvious choice for this new professorship” said Dr Ann Kenimer Interim Dean TAMUQ. “He is an integral part of the success of this campus and in achieving our vision of being the premier provider of engineering education in the region a valuable contributor to knowledge internationally and a valued resource to Qatar. We congratulate Dr Alnuweiri for this honour.”

Dr Alnuweiri recently delivered his inaugural talk on the future of technology and the ‘Internet of Things’ in which devices infrastructure and appliances become increasingly interconnected to enhance lives.

He highlighted the growing demand for exceptional expertise in science and engineering to support emerging technologies he will explore further through research and leadership in his new role.

Dr Alnuweiri joined TAMUQ faculty as professor in 2007 and chaired its Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme from 2009 to 2014. An outstanding teacher and researcher he has also carried out outreach and STEM activities at TAMUQ where he has produced over 70 journal papers 180 conference papers three book chapters US patents and 12 research grants of about $9m.The Peninsula
