UAE Permanent Mission IAEA hold annual meeting

VIENNA 19th March 2016 (WAM) -- The UAE Permanent Mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held its annual meeting with the IAEA from 16th to 17th March with the participation of national partners to review the status of implementation of the Integrated Work Plan (IWP) for the development of nuclear energy infrastructure in the UAE.

The UAE delegation was headed by Hamad Ali Al Kaabi Permanent Representative of the UAE to the IAEA. It also included representatives of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) the National Emergency Crises and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) Khalifa University of Science Technology and Research (KUSTAR) as well as representatives from the IAEA technical departments.

Representatives from stakeholder institutions from the UAE also participated along with the IAEA officials. They reviewed the progress made in the implementation of integrated work plan (IWP) for the development of nuclear energy infrastructure in the UAE from 2013 - 2017 and for determining future activities and the scope of the IAEA's support to the UAE nuclear energy programme.

The IWP document is a comprehensive framework that ensures ongoing support of the IAEA to the development of national nuclear energy infrastructure in the UAE. It has provided since its adoption in 2013 technical assistance to the UAE through more than 60 activities including training courses workshops fellowships and scientific visits as well as assessment missions carried out by the Agency in the UAE.

Seven national technical cooperation projects are being implemented in the UAE in cooperation with the IAEA which continuously contribute to human resources' capacity building and the development of qualified personnel to support the regulatory and operational aspects of the programme as well as nuclear energy science.

The IAEA also provides technical assistance to meet national needs in several areas including nuclear medicine water management environmental protection and industrial applications as well as radiation technology.
