Doha to host MEEA meet

DOHA: The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies will host the 15th International Conference for the Middle East Economists Association (MEEA) from March 23 to 25. The conference theme will be “The Impact of Oil Price Changes on the Economic Growth and Development in the MENA Countries.” The meet is expected to attract over 200 international delegates including economists academic researchers and PhD students.

The conference will examine the oil price impact on vital sectors in the economies of the region’s including financial markets labour markets and global markets. Many sessions will analyse oil price determinants; oil rent and institutional economics; FDI inflow and outflow international trade and oil prices and commodity prices .

Organisers of the conference have accepted 112 abstracts out of 134 submissions from various countries. Dr Hassan Aly Dean of the School of Public Administration and Development Economic at the Doha Institute (DI) said: “There has been a significant increase in the numbers of abstracts received conference participants and the countries they represent. We are looking forward to host around 200 participants from more than 30 countries. This will be the first time we will have delegates from countries such as Indonesia South Korea Cyprus and Malaysia. We are delighted to see such interest in this year’s conference and we are excited about vibrant discussions meaningful sessions and fruitful outcomes we hope this conference will achieve.”

Several high-profile economists have confirmed attendance including keynote speaker Professor James Robinson from Harvard University who authored the best-seller “Why Nations Fail”. Another prominent speaker will be Shantaynan Devarajan Chief Economist of the World Bank’s Middle East and North Africa Region.

This will be the first international conference hosted and organized by the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies. Previous MEEA conference took place in several other cities such as: Tunis Dubai Istanbul and Alexandria.
