S. Korea to spend USD840m on AI by 2020

(MENAFN) South Korea plans to invest a total of USD840 million by 2020 to boost the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, plus supporting the civilian-led establishment of a high-profile research center.

The proposed facility, cautiously named the Intelligence Information Technology Research Institute, will likely be located in Pankyo, just south of Seoul, according to a senior government official.

Six large local firms; Samsung and LG Electronics, SKT, KT, Naver and Hyundai Motor, have decided to join the initiative to help with all that is needed to construct a state of the art facility.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, has become the main focus to S. Korea since the recent set of matches between the nation's Go master Lee Sedol and AlphaGo, Google's AI computing system.
