In what is being called a milestone achievement the Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) has said that it crossed the 1mn customers mark in December 2015.

The number of subscriptions in Oman reached 1000429 with residential customers accounting for 75 per cent. The total units of electricity supplied increased by more than 200 per cent from 9.5 TWh in 2005 to 28.9 TWh in 2015 official figures show.

Qais bin Saud al Zakwani executive director and member at AER said 'An impressive achievement which confirms the benefits of the decision taken by the government to restructure the electricity sector in 2005. AER works to continue implementing the government's policy which ensures companies must meet all reasonable demand applications for electricity in Oman. I am pleased to confirm that the companies continue to fulfil their statutory obligation and this is evident from the growth experienced in customer accounts since 2005.'

He added 'Customers are also afforded a higher level of security of supply than they were in the past which is evident from the growth in the total units supplied to all customers. The sector as a whole is operating in a more efficient and effective manner across all the activities from generation to transmission distribution and supply.'

Since the restructuring customer accounts have risen by 470178. Before this the annual increase in customer accounts was at an average of four per cent. This rate has been seven per cent in the last decade.
