In two months' time the Ministry of Manpower (MoM) is planning to introduce an online system for registering work-related complaints.

'Our aim is to reduce the number of people visiting labour offices across the country to lodge complaints. The complaints can be related to workload work conditions pay and benefits discipline demotion harassment improper classification or denial of earned overtime or any type of problems at workplaces' Saeed bin Nasser al Saadi Advisor to H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Abdullah al Bakri Minister of Manpower told Muscat Daily.

Saadi said the move is part of the ministry's increasing emphasis on e-governance. 'H E Bakri is introducing this facility to ensure that the ministry's services can reach out to as many people as possible. With this facility we hope to cut down on paper work and secure all records digitally.'

An official in MoM said that this facility will also be helpful for those who want to submit complaints anonymously. The official said that the three most common complaints are related to pay and benefits when an employee is not fully compensated for work; workload when the employee is made to work more than that decided in the employment contract and unsafe work conditions.

'At present an employee has to visit the local labour office and fill a form to register the complaint. He then has to wait till his complaint has been attended by a labour inspector' the official said.
