Oman- Owner of establishment gets jail term for violations

A court in Muscat has sentenced the owner of an establishment to one month in prison and fined him RO500 for violating rules related to health and safety at workplace enforced by Ministerial Decision 286/2008.

The court also ruled that the sentence may be reduced if the owner works to make amends to the violations within 30 days of the judgment a press release stated. As per case details the owner had failed to act on the notice issued to him following an inspection of his premises by a team from the Ministry of Manpower within the deadline.

Following this the concerned department of the ministry referred the violations to the Public Prosecution. 'The Ministry of Manpower aims to protect manpower in their work environment' the press release quoted Salim bin Said al Badi director general for labour welfare in the ministry as saying. 'They are the route for economic development and creating safe work environment is vital to achieve growth' he further stated.
