Qatar- Salam: 'Lebanon Keen on Best Ties with GCC Countries'


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Doha March 16 (QNA) - Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam has praised the Qatari efforts to save Lebanon saying that Lebanon was going towards a collapse in 2008 but was saved thanks to the Doha Agreement.
Speaking to Qatari Arabic daily " Al Sharq" Salam stressed that the Lebanese government seeks Qatar and the GCC' assistance in electing a new President of the Lebanese Republic .
Lebanon is keen on the best of relations with GCC member States and the Arab consensus" referring to the Arab consensus achieved in Beirut in 2002 during the Arab Summit Conference which launched the Arab Peace Initiative approved by all Arab States.
He stressed confidence that the GCC member States will not 'abandon' Lebanon adding that 'it is our duty to go to our brothers in GCC member states and recognize the mistakes." In 1989 Lebanon was going towards a collapse and it was rescued by the Taif Agreement thanks to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in 2008 it also was going to collapse and was saved thanks to the Doha Agreement he went on saying.
The stability of GCC member states is an essential element in light of the collapse witnessed by the region Salam said adding that the Lebanese presence in the GCC countries can not be abandoned.
He pointed to his meeting with GCC Ambassadors to Lebanon during which he affirmed keenness to communicate through them or by visiting GCC member states to explain his country's position and matters. (QNA)
