A welcome roar for Dubai Safari's first inhabitants: paper

ABU DHABI 17th March 2016 (WAM) -- A UAE paper has said that the first batch of more than 10000 animals who arrived at the Dubai Safari brought with them the most promising sign that the 119-hectare project is progressing towards its stated goal of being ranked among the world's best wildlife centres.

"The AED1 billion safari is expected to open its doors to the public by the end of this year. When it does so it will be more than a collection of 350 species of animals and it is therefore critical to understand the role that a modern zoo can play in championing the cause of endangered animals as well as natural conservation" said Gulf News in an editorial on Thursday.

First Dubai Safari will act as a natural reserve for rare species of wildlife and flora in coordination with other safaris worldwide. This very vital function in breeding and protecting a new generation of animals that would otherwise be in jeopardy in the wild is far removed from the stereotypical image of a zoo replete with birds and chimpanzees screeching in cages.

Secondly given the elaborate opportunities for visitors to interact with the animals such safaris ensure that the young generation gets to appreciate the reasons why these magnificent creatures are so critical to our global ecosystem and sustenance. Of course these possibilities were difficult to implement within the limited area of the existing zoo in the heart of Jumeirah. The move to the sprawling facility in Dubai's Al Warqa'a will thus be a welcome step for the 1000 current inhabitants of the Jumeirah zoo and this is one relocation that could have happened much earlier.

"But ultimately with its focus on renewable energy optimum use of open areas and showcasing Arabian wildlife and Bedouin activities the safari will be yet another milestone for Dubai" concluded the Dubai-based daily.
