Mad About Movies

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Dressmaker

This superb independent film is why we're glad cinemas contain more than one screen. With the week's blockbuster Kung Fu Panda 3 rolling into town, there is a danger The Dressmaker could get looked over. However, to pass by this quirky Australian tale would be short-sighted.

Starring Kate Winslet as Tilly, a small town girl forced to flee now returning as a glamorous fashion designer, the picture shines a light on the destructive force gossip and narrow-minded points of view can be.

Accused of killing her school tormenter, Tilly is forcibly removed from her home and mother in Dungatar and sent to the city. From there she travels the fashion capitals of Europe, learning the art of couture. We catch up with her in the mid 1950s when Tilly, now a woman, rides into Dungatar looking for answers. There she finds a hostile mother driven batty from society's exclusion, her nomadic love interest Teddy played by Liam Hemsworth and Sergeant Farrat, a closeted fashion loving policeman. With her Singer sewing machine in hand, Tilly takes on the towns dusty inhabitants first causing outrage with her return and glamour, before infiltrating their group with her undoubted talent for making them look good.

IMDb gives this 7.2

Kate Winslet properly learnt how to sew for the part

Kung Fu Panda 3

It's loud, it's colourful and that's just lead actor Jack Black. Kung Fu Panda is a well-loved franchise and this one looks as if it is set to continue the story with the requisite number of laughs.

This time round Po is the kung fu master and meets his biological family before having to fight off some mystical being. It's not rocket science, but it should be funny.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 85%

Trivia

Four of the Jolie-Pitt children voice small characters in the film

The Wave

Norwegian disaster movie The Wave sees a landslide fall into a fjord creating a massive wave which wipes out several towns in its path. One man, Kristian, survives the devastation and goes on the hunt to find his missing family.

Aside from the obvious lack of mega funds for the effects, the film looks solid. We hate dubbing, so the fact every character's voice has been taped over is a minus. Subtitles would have been better, but it is still worth a look.

IMDb gives it 6.7

This was Norway's Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film 2016

Solace

It's not often we like to kick Sir Anthony Hopkins, nor Colin Farrell, but Solace looks atrocious. The wholly unoriginal plot of psychic Hopkins helping the FBI to find serial killer Farrell is laughable and outdated. Stink.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it 32%

Trivia

The script was originally intended to be rewritten as a sequel to Se7en.
