UAE- Ankara killings highlight need to uproot terrorism: paper

ABU DHABI 15th March 2016 (WAM) -- A UAE newspaper has said that the suicide car bomb killing of several people in Ankara is a cowardly act aimed to break the unity and harmony among the people of Turkey.

The attack tearing through a crowded transport hub a few hundred metres from the Justice and Interior Ministries is the second such strike at the administrative heart of the Turkish capital in under a month.

"What is sad is that the incident has happened at a time when Turkey itself is going through a challenging phase" said The Gulf Today in an editorial on Tuesday.

"Economic challenges political polarisation Daesh threat and over two million Syrian refugees are among the major issues that Turkey is presently struggling to tackle. It is stated that the explosives were the same kind as those used in the February 17th attack that killed 29 people mostly soldiers and the bomb had been packed with pellets and nails to cause maximum injury and damage.

"The latest attack has occurred at a government town dominated by ministries parliament embassies and the sprawling armed forces headquarters' compounds. Sadly Turkey has witnessed a series of bombing incidents in recent months.

"On February 17th 29 people were killed in a car bombing targeting the Turkish military in Ankara. The attack was claimed by a group calling itself the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons but Turkish authorities maintained that there was also a Syrian Kurdish link.

"On January 12th 11 German tourists were killed and another 16 people wounded in a suicide attack by a Syrian bomber in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district the ancient tourist heart of the city. On October 10th 2015 over 100 people were killed and more than 500 wounded in twin suicide bombings targeting a pro-Kurdish peace rally in Ankara.

"Over 40000 people have been killed since the Kurdistan Workers' Party took up arms in 1984 demanding an independent state for Kurds. Since then the group has narrowed its demands to greater rights and autonomy. The security situation is certainly a huge challenge for a country heavily dependent on tourism.

"Such insane killings reiterate the need to rally international community efforts to stamp out the terrorism menace in all its forms and manifestations as it poses a threat to all ethical values and international norms.

"The Republic of Turkey deserves all support as it has taken a firm position in condemning and rejecting terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The latest condemnable killings underline the need to consolidate international efforts to root out the scourge of terrorism" concluded the Sharjah-based daily.
