Oman- Around 500 women to take part in OCA's zumbathon charity event

Around 500 women are expected to attend the first zumbathon charity event of the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) at Muscat College Sports Hall on April 23.

This was announced at a press conference held at the OCA headquarters on Sunday.

The event will be led by Ana Georgescu zumba education specialist from Romania. Two other instructors Asya al Lamki and Natalia Costa zumba instructors from Oman will also be taking part in the event.

Asya said "Zumba is one of the most fun and easy fitness programme. On doctor's recommendation even people with cardiovascular diseases diabetes and pregnant women can do zumba. It is a stress-free exercise that is known to have several health and psychological benefits. Last year we conducted a similar event at Petroleum Development Oman which saw around 200 participants. We raised RO6000 and this time we have tied up with OCA. We will donate 80 per cent of proceeds from the event to OCA.'

Speaking about the growing interest in zumba Natalia said that there are around 40 instructors in Oman. "It is becoming very popular. A hour of zumba can burn about 500 calories.' Zumba originated in Colombia in 2001 and has since spread worldwide said Asya. The workout is done on fast rhythms and combines moves of salsa flamenco tango and several other dance forms.

Yuthar al Rawahy founder and chairperson of OCA said "This event will draw attention of many people. We are happy to be associated with these two zumba trainers in Oman. The event will help us raise awareness and promote good health.' The event is open only for women above 16 years. Entry fee is RO10 and it will held from 3-6pm.
