DOHA: The number of organ transplants — mostly of kidney — in Qatar has gone up significantly last year although it didn’t have an impact on the waiting time for patients according to a senior official at the Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Centre of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

Currently the centre treats a total of 712 patients. It includes 360 hemodialysis patients 200 peritoneal dialysis patients and 12 home dialysis patients. This is in addition to a total of 140 end stage kidney disease patients (pre-dialysis stage).

In 2015 the centre performed 19 kidney transplants and six liver transplants a jump from previous years.

According to official data the number of organ transplants increased ten times between 2009 and 2015. More than 100000 potential donors have registered with Qatar’s pioneering Organ Donor Registry marking a major milestone for the project.

“Over the past three to four years we have seen an increase in the number of kidney transplant but with no significant effect on the waiting time for the patients. Additionally the number of patients with end stage renal disease is increasing annually. About 48 percent of our patients in this category are Qataris and 68 percent of them living with Diabetes Mellitus” Dr Fadwa Al Ali Director of the Centre told this daily.

The centre provides care to patients with early chronic kidney disease and end stage kidney disease through out-patient clinics as well as dialysis dependent patients.

The centre has total of 80 haemodialysis stations 20 of them as private and isolation rooms and the rest as common rooms each common room with five dialysis stations. “We also provide a range of services and care to the patients. This includes in-center haemodialysis care as well as in-center and home peritoneal dialysis care. In 2015 we started to provide wound care and home haemodialysis services. We always make sure that the latest advanced and cost-effective technology in dialysis care (machines care items and medication) are provided to our patients” said Dr Al Ali. “Other services include care to help them manage their conditions including diabetic care foot and wound care and related services such as social work and a pharmacy” he added.

Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center is planning to introduce cardiology care this year along with special care for patients with high risk of developing kidney disease such as patients with diabetes and hypertension.

“This will be in collaboration with other related services in HMC including diabetic care hypertension care and cardiovascular care” said Dr Al Ali.
