Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa Hospital in Boutilimit Mauritania has issued its annual report on medical activities and services offered last year to improve the health conditions of the communities of Boutilimit and neighbouring regions.

Operated and managed by Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) under a memorandum of understanding with Education Above All (EAA) the hospital relied on the resources and infrastructure of 2014 with 89-member workforce of specialist doctors nurses assistants social workers and administrative/services staff.

According to the report the emergency unit received 13092 cases outpatient clinics 47065 clients recovery departments (internal medicine paediatrics obstetrics & gynaecology and general surgery) 5650 stays obstetrics and gynaecology department 1255 deliveries the medical lab 41564 examinations the medical imaging department 7703 X-ray and ultrasound images and the surgical unit 732 operations. The hospital served more than 79000 people last year.

The hospital focuses on training the students of public health schools and trained 69 medical workers including 20 nurses 12 midwives and 37 social advisers last year.

Working towards sustainable and comprehensive professional development of human resources the hospital held four training courses for obstetrics and gynaecology staff conducted doctors and midwife trainers from Nouakchott. Sixty-three medical and paramedical workers benefited.

The hospital participated in a two-day medical convoy dispatched by a local charity in Monguel Gorgol Region and another dispatched by the School of Medicine in Nouakchott. It contributed consultants of various specialities resident physicians nurses and social advisers with medical equipment and medicines. Working nonstop for four days the team conducted 426 examinations and 45 operations in ENT paediatrics obstetrics and gynaecology general surgery and ultrasound imaging.

Three multi-speciality medical missions were sent to three districts of Trarza Region with doctors medications and medical supplies. Lasting one day each the three missions accomplished 842 consultations.

As part of World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ‘Save Lives: Clean Your Hands’ campaign the hospital organised an open education day for staff with informative and field activities. It ended with a training course for 25 staff featuring specialised discussions and presentations. The hospital was established in 2007 under the patronage of H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser formerly through the Qatari-Mauritanian Social Development Foundation and now through EAA a global initiative to build an international movement to contribute to human social and economic development by offering good education and welfare programmes and initiatives. Since taking the responsibility for operating and managing the hospital QRC has worked to develop and upgrade main departments including emergency obstetrics and gynaecology paediatrics internal medicine surgery and dentistry a pharmacy and outpatient clinics.

On average the medical staff of the 73-bed hospital perform 40 operations per month with women and children as the main beneficiaries of the services.The Peninsula
