DOHA: As kidney disease affects 13 percent of Qatar’s population Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Nephrology Department in collaboration with the Corporate Communications Department held events to mark World Kidney Day.

Officially held on March 10 the global theme this year was ‘Kidney Disease and Children’ and HMC placed a focus on raising awareness about kidney issues related to children.

Minster of Public Health H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari also Managing Director HMC said “Kidney disease is a serious condition affecting the health and lifestyles of many young and old people in Qatar. This year’s World Kidney Day activities build on the progress we have made in recent years to provide safe effective and compassionate care for patients with kidney disorders.”

The early stages of kidney disease often show no signs or symptoms and for this reason it can be difficult to accurately diagnose kidney disorders before they reach an advanced stage.

A person can lose up to 90 percent of kidney function before experiencing any signs. Many signs and symptoms may not be obviously associated with chronic kidney disease but it is important that people suffering regularly from the symptoms consult their doctor for a test.

Chronic kidney disease is a long-term condition caused by the inability of the kidneys to function effectively. “Around 10 percent of the world’s population is affected by chronic kidney disease and it is estimated that it affects 13 percent of Qatar’s population” said Dr Hassan Al Malki Head of Nephrology HMC.

There are risk factors contributing to the development of kidney disorders and it is important that people are aware of them and take steps to prevent them where possible.

“People with a family history of kidney disease those above 50 and people of African Hispanic Aboriginal or Asian origin have an increased risk. High blood pressure diabetes excess body fat and smoking increase the chances of developing kidney disease” he added.

HMC’s kidney team presented gifts to dialysis patients at Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Centre as part of activities. Students from Qatar University and schools also visited the centre to learn about kidney function and how to prevent kidney disease.

A family community day was held at Aspire Park featuring fun and educational activities. The nephrology team educated the public about signs and symptoms of kidney disease and how to maintain good kidney health and undergo tests. The Peninsula
