Southeast Turkey clash leaves 8 PKK terrorists dead


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) >Eight PKK terrorists were killed during clashes with Turkish security forces in southeastern Diyarbakir province’s Sur district Saturday the regional governor’s office said.

Two policemen were also wounded in the incident when they came under fire by a group of PKK terrorists with long-barreled weapons while they were patrolling the area after the 103-day anti-terror operation in the district ended earlier this week.

Diyarbakir Governor's Office said in a written statement that the clash erupted around midday Saturday when police retaliated to the PKK attack leaving eight terrorists dead.

The injured police officers were taken to Diyarbakir Military Hospital the statement added.

According to security sources one of the terrorists killed was identified as "Ciyager" a codenamed for PKK terrorist Cihad Turkan who was said to be responsible for Sur area.

Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala announced the end of anti-terror operationin the area Wednesday -- the longest running in a series of anti-terror actions across the southeast that saw Turkish police and military troops oust the PKK from urban areas clear the barricades close the burrows and defuse the explosives planted by PKK terrorists.

In a statement issued Thursday Turkish General Staff said a total of 279 PKK terrorists were killed during anti-terror operation in Sur; also 206 barricades were removed 365 improvised explosives defused 504 weapons seized along with 48048 ammunition and 3470 kilograms of explosive-making materials.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization also by the U.S. and the EU -- resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the Turkish state in July. Since then more than 290 members of the security forces have been martyred and thousands of terrorists killed in the operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
