Qatar's efforts for citizens' release backed

DOHA: The fifth joint ministerial meeting of the foreign ministers of the GCC states Jordan and Morocco which concluded in Riyadh on Wednesday declared solidarity with Qatar in all efforts to secure the release of the Qatari citizens kidnapped in southern Iraq last December.

The final communiqué issued by the meeting expressed the hope that communications by the Qatari government with the Iraqi government would culminate in the safe return of the kidnapped to Qatar.

The meeting held the Iraqi government responsible for ensuring the safety of the kidnapped Qataris and their release.

The statement expressed satisfaction over the ongoing joint work to achieve the strategic partnership in accordance with the work plans that were adopted at previous meetings of foreign ministers of GCC member states Jordan and Morocco.

The ministers welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cultural cooperation between the GCC countries and Jordan.

They expressed their unwavering support to the Palestinian cause.

The meeting stressed the need to deal firmly with the menace of terrorism and terrorist movements praising the efforts of their countries in this regard at all international and regional levels.

They also lauded Saudi Arabia’s initiative to form an Islamic military alliance to fight terrorism and extremism. The ministers expressed their complete rejection of the Iranian interference in the internal affairs of the GCC countries and the region.

The Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al Jubeir addressing a press conference at the conclusion of the meeting stressed the importance of a ceasefire to pave the way for the arrival of aid to Yemen.

On Iran he said “If Iran changed its method and its policy there is nothing to prevent opening a new page based on the principle of good neighbourliness and non-interference in the affairs of others and inciting sectarian strife in the Islamic world.”

On Syria the minister said that the logic of the departure of Al Assad politically or militarily is still there.

He pointed out that the European Union is calling for the preservation of the independence and unity of Lebanon as demanded by Saudi Arabia.
